What’s it about

I didn’t catch this show until late in the second season – and for some reason no-one else I know has seen it either. After laughing so hard at the one episode I did see on network tv, I took a chance and ordered the first season. That was the BEST decision I’ve made in a long time!

This show is absolutely hilarious. As in, gut-busting, side-splitting, ‘laugh yourself silly’ kind of funny. Honestly – at one point I was laughing so hard my dog came in from the other room to see what was wrong with me. There are only two other comedies that have had me laughing this hard for virtually every episode – Malcolm in the Middle and The Big Bang Theory. And I’d almost go so far as to say Mom is even funnier.

This show is a perfect example of the magic that happens when seriously gifted actors are handed a brilliant script. Allison Janney (“Bonnie”) and Anna Faris (“Christy”) play off each other perfectly as a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo. Both were teen moms, both partied hard and were terrible mothers, and both are now picking up the pieces and trying to start over – one AA meeting at a time. There’s a reason Janney has won not one, but TWO Emmy’s for this show.

The subject matter is hard and gritty, but underneath that is a show with true heart. Sure, Bonnie & Christy’s bad parenting decisions are completely over the top (which is what makes it so funny), but there are also moments that are so sweet and heartfelt that I found myself reaching for tissues. Because no matter how crazy this family is, the show is ultimately about redemption. It’s about facing the consequences of your actions and trying to make better choices. It’s about forgiving people who have hurt you and forgiving yourself for your mistakes. And it’s about trying to make a better life for your kids than the one you had. Even if you’ve never had a substance abuse problem, I think everyone can relate to these women, which is what makes this show so phenomenal.

The supporting cast is also great – particularly Octavia Spencer (Red Band Society, The Help). If you’re a fan of Big Bang, then you’ll recognize her as the DMV lady (“The Euclid Alternative”) – who has one of the funniest scenes in the entire series (in my opinion). Spencer almost steals the show as “Regina” – a recovering alcoholic who is headed to jail for embezzling 3 million dollars from her clients.

I’m so glad this has been picked up for a 3rd season, especially since it seems to be flying under the radar (despite the Emmy wins). Brilliantly acted, brilliantly written – this is simply one of the best comedies ever produced on television. I HIGHLY recommend it! Anna Faris and Emmy? winner Allison Janney star in a new comedy from Chuck Lorre. Anna Faris plays Christy, a single mom whose newly found sobriety has given her the ability to see her life clearly… and she does not like the view. Now she must try to untangle years of reckless decisions in order to make a better life for her and her kids. But she discovers that just because you want to be a better person doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Everywhere she looks there are challenges: She is trying to stop drinking in wine country, have a healthy romance with her unavailable boss, raise her young son to be a good man despite his father’s influence, convince her troubled teenage daughter to make better choices than she did, and, perhaps the most difficult task ¨C forgive her estranged mother, Bonnie, played by Allison Janney, for not giving her any of the tools she needed to handle life in the first place.
